Tom DeStefano taught American History at Paterson H.S. for 30 years and currently teaches at Bergen Community College. He has presented many programs at local libraries. His specialties include the American presidents, the Civil War, and New Jersey history.

The History of West Point

This class will cover the beginnings of West Point as a strategic fort at the infamous S-curve of the Hudson River. The establishment of a fort at West Point kept the British from controlling the Hudson River and splitting the New England states from the Middle States. During the American Revolution, George Washington said, “West Point is the most important post in North America.” We will hear the story of Benedict Arnold who tried to turn West Point over to the British. After the war, the Military Academy was established here, creating a permanent officer Corp for the Army We will conclude with the post-Revolutionary history of this most important site.
