Susanne Kernan

Susanne Kernan is a Rockland grassroots activist and volunteer Climate Reality Leader trained by former US Vice President Al Gore and The Climate Reality Project in 2020. She is a founding member of Rockland Citizens Action Network, and a long-time member of the Rockland Water Coalition. As one of over 20,000 trained Climate Reality Leaders from over 150 countries, Susanne has a deep understanding of the science of climate change, the impacts of the climate crisis, and possible solutions to the crisis that each of us can take individually at home and collectively in our community. Susanne guest taught about state politics and environmental issues at the Learning Collective in 2018 and 2019, for two of Bill Batson’s classes

This class is about the social breakdown of trust in institutions large and small (from school districts to Congress), in a time of increasing cultural and political polarization. We’ll be asking ourselves, how did we get here, and is there a way back? We will briefly look at three examples of successful community-building that overcame political and/or cultural polarization in the US and UK, and discuss how or if these techniques could be applied here to rebuild trust and a sense of community engagement on the local level in Rockland County and on the state and national level politically.
